What Happens Here & When

VISITOR INFORMATION

 The Darling Downs Zoo is open to visitors every day of the year except Christmas Day.       

The zoo opens at 9am. Last admissions are at 3pm. The gates close at 4pm.

THE ZOO IS IN A RURAL AREA OF QUEENSLAND.  IT CAN BE HOT IN THE SUMMER AND COLD IN THE WINTER!

The zoo may close early on days of extreme weather conditions out of consideration for human and animal welfare and safety.  If it is a very hot, wet or stormy day it may pay to contact us in advance if you are planning a visit.

DAILY FREE EVENTS include:

10.30am MEET A BABY CROCODILE

Get up close and personal with a baby crocodile.  Bring your camera and photograph the kids as they interact with this Aussie reptile!

10.50am ASIAN MONKEY TALK 

Join us while we explain about the life of Macaques - their habits, what they eat and how they have helped enrich our lives.  

11.00am SUMATRAN TIGER TALK AND TREAT FEED

Watch the keeper feed our beautiful, but endangered, Sumatran Tiger.  She is normally quite shy and hard to see so this is your best opportunity each day to meet her. 

11.15am  GIRAFFE TALK  This is the best time of the day to get a guaranteed look at our beautiful young Giraffe girls. Our keeper will introduce you and tell you lots of interesting information about them while they enjoy a snack in their spacious paddock.

11.30am MEERKAT TREAT FEED  Queensland's only Meerkat group rarely stay still long enough for a good photo!  Interacting with their keeper at this time of the day could be your best opportunity.

       

11.40am AFRICAN LIONS!  Queensland's pride - featuring our normal coloured brown Lions plus our magnificent White Lions.  The only Lions in any Queensland zoo.

12pm BRAZILIAN TAPIR FEED  Lunch time for our pair of Brazilian Tapir.  See the amazing meal that they eat every day and listen to the keeper describing the habits of these two very unusual animals.

12.15pm LUNCH TIME! Bring along a picnic or cook up your favourite barbeque meal on one of our free gas BBQs.  You could let us do the cooking!  Every day we offer a freshly cooked good old Aussie sausage sizzle consisting of freshly barbecued local sausage, bread and your choice of sauces all for just $2.50.  You can order onion as an extra for just another .50c.  We also sell pies, sausage rolls, some vegetarian and gluten free meals, cold drinks, ice cream, snacks and REAL coffee!

1.00pm INTRODUCING SOUTH AMERICAN BIRDS

South America is home to the world's largest rainforest.  Come meet some of the beautiful and intelligent birds that make it their home.  

1.10pm INTRODUCING SOUTH AMERICAN MONKEYS

Mischievous monkeys!  Learn about the monkeys seen in many movies and TV Shows as well as the smallest monkeys in the world!

1.30pm SNAKE PHOTOS

Your opportunity to have your photo taken with a harmless snake at no extra cost. You bring along your camera and we'll supply the snake!  If you don't have a camera we can take photos for you for just $5 each photo.

As the zoo expands, and more animals come to live here, we will be adding more free talks and photo ops.  Up to date details will be on your zoo map - free with each admission family or group. 

On days with predicted additional visitation, extra activities may be provided.

Zoo facilities include EFTPOS, a kiosk selling pies, sausage rolls, crisps and twisties, ice creams, cold drinks and REAL COFFEE, a souvenir shop, free use of the zoo BBQs if you would prefer to cook your own meat, a shady picnic area, free car parking with ample room for caravans and toilets for the disabled. Feel free to bring your own picnic if you would prefer. The zoo is wheelchair accessible but it should be acknowledged that this a rural zoo in savannah type grassland country.  Paths are fine gravel and can be challenging for a wheelchair, or a pram with small wheels, following rain events.  

The Darling Downs can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

In keeping with world's best practice for animals and families, the Darling Downs Zoo is an alcohol and smoke free zone.
